Yangon ( the main gateway to Myanmar)
Yangon is the main gateway to Myanmar. Yangon
still keeps the reputation of the garden city of the east. Thus one
can enjoy the evergreen and tropical trees, parks and beautiful
lakes. The present day Yangon covers the area of 350 sqkm with over
5 million populations. Yangon is easily accessible by flight from
Bangkok, Singapore, Kulalumpure and China. The highlights of Yangon
are the world famous pagoda, Shwedagon, the gigantic reclining Chauk
htatgyi Buddha Image, the beautiful botataung Pagoda, Sule Pagoda,
the huge marble sitting Buddha Image ( Kyauktawgyi ) the famous
bustling Bogyoke Aung San ( Scott) market, National musuem , Gem
Museum, Zoological garden and so on...
Mandalay Sight seeing
Mandalay is the centre of culture and core of
Buddhism. Mandalay is the second largest city of Myanmar. Mandalay
lies on the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy river. It is situated on
the plain which stretches form the Shan hills on the East to the
Irrawaddy river on the west . It is about 430 miles north of Yangon.
It has an area of roughly 25 sqmiles.Mandalay can be reached by
flight (over two hours) or by train and car (12hrs. The place to

1. Mandalay hill
A visit to Mandalay hill will reflect forever in your memory. The
view from the peak is breathtaking experience, in the distance
you'll see the Shan hills, fields of paddy and crops, the mighty
Ayeyarwaddy river, Sagaing, Mingun hill ranges other landscapes and
panoramicc views. On top of the hill is a very large image of Buddha
with the right hand streched out and a finger pointing towards the
old palace. A Buddhist hermit named U Khanti ( AD 1866-1948) was the
pioneer and main architect of Mandalay Hill development and
establishment programme in the British colonist time. Necessary
renovations were done by the Government.
2. Myanansankyaw Royal palace
It was built by King Mindom ( AD-1853-78) . He shifted the capital
from Amarpura to Mandalay in 1857. The palace was surrounded by moat
filled with water and thick walls in square shape 2km long on each
side. The moat is 225 ft wide and 11ft deep.The palace wall is 8m
high and 3m thick. The pavillions've made of teak wood. There're
originally 3 gates on each side of the wall totalling 12 gates.
There're 114 apartment and buildings . In 1885, the British occupied
the Mandalay and changed the Palace as Fort Duffrin. Since then, the
British officers dwelled in the Palace.Some of the buildings in the
palace were turned into garrison church, club and military quarters
and barracks. Nearly 18 years, the palace was neglected. In 1901,
Lord Curzon, the British Viceroy of India arrived the palace and
issued to preserve Mandalay Palace. So Mandalay Palace had remained
44 years as a museum. But the Palace suffered the Bomb attacked
during the II World war. Till 1989 , there were only a few charred
buildings were left. So under the guidence of the millitary
Government the reconstruction work of Mandalay Palace on its
original modoel carried out since 1989-90. Now there're 66 buildings
of palace. The construction work took six years to finish. Now the
Grand reconstructed Mandalay Palace was opened to Public.
3. Shwenandaw Monastery
Shwenandaw Monastery is one of the rare surviving Myanmar wooden
architecture of the late 19 century . Originally it was an apartment
of Royal palace, mosaic wooden buildings constructed in 1857 by king
Mindom. It was King Mindom's private living chamber and he died in
this apartment.So his son King Thibaw moved this apartment from
Royal Palace to a place near Atumushi Monastery and dojnated to the
monks as a monastery in 1880. It has now been maintained and
preserved in its original style. Today the golden Palace Monastery
is one of the tourist attractions for art lovers and architects.
4.Atumashi Kyaung ( Incomparable Monastery)
It is situated near Shwenandaw Monastery. It was a wooden building
with brick and stucco platform,stairway and other walls. The Buddha
image in the monastery was made of the Silken garments of the King
with a lacquer exterior , a big diamond on the forehead was stolen
in 1885. The monastery was burnt down in 1890.
